Trying to survive the rest of 2009…and the first 7 hours of 2010

Posted in rants on December 31, 2009 by kingbiscuitpants

It’s 6:15 am, I’m watching Phinias & Pherb (a surprisingly good kids show) since it’s that, infomercials, CNN (which is the worst thing in the world if you despeerately need to get back to sleep) or the latest VH1 dating skank/douchebag fest, my back is killing me and I’m just trying to relax & take the edge off because work tonight will be a nightmare.  I go into work at 6pm and work till 11 as a cook then change and will be working from 11pmish to 5 or 6 am as security for an event at the restraunt since the boss knows I used to be a bouncer and I’m already on the payroll.

Tonight is going to be a massive endurance contest so wish me luck lummoxcateers, I need all the help I can get.  It is a bummer that I won’t be with Shu & the kids tonight but we REALLY need the money; especially since unemployment just told me that I’ ve been overpaid by $138.00 and I have to send them a check or I get criminal charges (donations accepted : I am finally making headroom on the illustration job I just got so that should let me fix the home PC & officially move all my computing to LINUX .

To breifly get off subject I can see LINUX as computing’s homeopathy for people suffering from windows but can’t afford a Mac, but that’s just an exhaustion related association.

In any case 2009 has been a challenging year for everyone I personally know. In fact I don’t know anybody (I didn’t ask Nicko however I ought to-it’s still fucking cool that that is an option but that is pretty much the only good thing that happened to me in this piece of shit year…  Ok the Maiden concert & and the Opera Mash Ups were cool too, but everything else sucked) who had a good year; if so bless you but I haven’t met you.  I’m about to try to turn off the TV & PC in the hopes of getting some REM.  Happy, safe & prosperous new year to all of you and wish me luck, rest and stamina.

love dom

Dom’s RastaBarvarian Roast Duck, with Roasted Jamaican Pumpkin, Carrots & Potatos

Posted in Food on December 27, 2009 by kingbiscuitpants

Hello my loyal and hungry lummoxcateers; I know it has been quite a while since I’ve done a recipie post (which ironically is why this blog came into existance-thanks scott) but frankly I really haven’t cooked anything that has been particularly noteworthy until now.  This is a meal I’ve been threatening to make for a while, first inspired by Shu & I’s trip to the wonderful Old Heidleburg restaurant:

as well as my lifetime love of caribbean food and a curiosity to how duck would hold up to jerk style seasoning (wonderfully by the way) so for Xmas day this is what I made I really hope you all enjoy it, the recipie is enough for 2 ducks or 3 chickens if you’re like my mother and refuse to do duck.  The vegetables I chose to roast in the pan were an easy call but in the future I might try to cook vegetables in the color of the Ethiopian flag  I would keep the Jamaican pumpkin for the gold, callaloo for the green ( thrown in towards the end of course) and I haven’t figured out what red would be.  In any case here we go.

2 whole ducks

1 stale loaf of pannetone bread (coffee cake, rasin bread, or even fruitcake could be subsitiuted)

1 blueberry muffin

4 slices of rye bread

3 onions diced

5 cloves of garlic, crushed or diced

2 tablespoons salt

several shakes of worstishire sauce

4 carrots diced

1/2 pound of chopped spinach

2 ounces apple schnapps

1 big squirt of ketchup

3 ounces dark rum

1/2 a pound of cooked & finely crumbled bacon

2 tablespoons badia complete

2 tablespoons black pepper

4 tablespoons dry jerk seasoning

a dash of clove

1 1/2 sticks of butter

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1/2 of a jamaican pumpkin

5 red potatoes

5 carrots whole

2 onions sliced

a splash of red wine

some flour to thicken the gravy

By the way before getting into the how to’s it is essential to have a 2 large baking pans (one can be the cheap disposable kind) and a rack because the rack is really vital when cooking duck.

Let’s start with the stuffing, into a large pot toss in the oil, butter, schnapps and rum.  Once the butter has melted toss in the diced carrots, spices & worstershire, then the onion and garlic once the carrots look about cooked.  When the vegetables have sweated add the bacon & start tearing up the breads for the stuffing and add them to the pot then stir them to coat thuroughly and have the breads absorb the liquids.

Now that the stuffing is cooling take the ducks and rub them inside in out with liberal pours of first dark rum, then the apple schapps, then stuff the ducks with the stuffing mixture.  Once the ducks are stuffed liberally rub them down with salt, pepper, jerk seasoning and badia complete & place onto the rack.

In the large roasting pan (the good one) lay out the carrots, roughly broken into the same size as well as the potatoes & pumpkin; then cover with a layer of sliced onions.

Place the rack with the ducks on top of the vegetables and place into a 350 degree oven for 90 minutes.  After the 90 minutes has passed remove the duck from the top of the vegetables and place into the second pan and cook for another hour, then lower to 25o and cook for another 50 – 60 minutes (my oven is old & shitty so I have to struggle with it)

Remove the rack and place on a serving dish with the vegetables, placing the good pan on the stove and adding whatever drippings from the second pan to the first and set to medium high heat.   Add an ounce of red wine, and ounce of rum and another ounce of schnapps to the drippings and start wisking in the flour until thickened.

So there you go it really was a resounding success and balanced the high sweetness of the stuffing with the complexity of the jerk, try it, I really hope you enjoy it, & one last time, Happy Holidays!

Facebook Revalations

Posted in rants on December 27, 2009 by kingbiscuitpants

After much cajoling and after the millionth invite I threw together a facebook page.  What is interesting that all these people came out of the woodwork that I haven’t seen in years and said their hellos.  The thing is after looking at all the pictures of these people from high school and time immortal I realized one thing…  I’m the guy who aged horribly & looks like hell.

Upon this realization I frantically searched facebook to prove myself wrong…  I couldn’t.   Still I thought, “How the hell did this happen?” to which my brain responded “Oh really?” and proceded to provide a highlights reel of the past 20 years.

Well, at least I had fun.

an xmas carol, the pogues, wonder stuff, nostalgia

Posted in music, rants on December 24, 2009 by kingbiscuitpants

merry xmas everybody, before I have to shuffle off to the rib mines I present my favorite xmas song the “Pogues” “Fairytale of New York” which features the talented Kristy McColl, notable partly because it’s the only Xmas song I can think of that includes the word scumbag, however, it always touches me in a very sincere and meaningful way so here you go me much beloved lummoxcateers.

The next song reminds me of xmas in a bit of a tangental way, it’s the Wonder Stuff’s “Welcome to the Cheap Seats” which I clearly remember singing loudly and badly on the patio of the long defunkt and missed “Mudhouse” to me this song really has the feel of those “magical”, naive, joyous, youthful times during xmas break in high school with some old friends,

Again happy holidays everybody and to risk seemingly maudlin language, not just today, but every day, make time for the people you love and give them not the slightest doubt how much you care about them; and for strangers reach out and just make the eff0rt to treat them like fellow human beings, you might be the only one who does that for them.

much love

Missing so many of you

Posted in rants on December 22, 2009 by kingbiscuitpants

This message has been peercolating in the depths of my mind for several days now.

So many of us find as we travel forward through our lives our circle of friends gets shorter, like satillites that escape the gravitational pull of the main body.  It’s not malice, people move, careers change, you have children, you’re just so exhausted mentally and emotionally from work you can’t bear to pick up a phone, you just lost yet another loved one & you can’t bear mentioning it again, or you’re just depressed.  The cost is dear, & without a casually made goodbye another friend is gone.

In a particularly touching moment in the show “Boston Legal” 2 characters are discussing the deterioration of their friendship an one quite tellingly says,  “Friends are like rooftop gardens; we mean to take care of them with the best of intentions yet they inevetably fall into neglect.”   I think that has happened entirely too often in my own life as well.

Since it “tis the season” to awkwardly remind those you love or miss that you are alive I encourage you all to better tend your rooftop gardens and reach out to those you love.

To my distant friends I have not forgotten you and I miss you all very much, to everyone else I send my love as well.

Have yourselves a happy, safe, and hopefully enjoyable holiday after this very, very, tough year.

Much Love to you all.

Stuck working on x-mas blues

Just found out this little tidbit last night, I can’t “complain” since I’m lucky to have a job at all and the owner/manager is going to be in the trenches with us on the 24th & 25th as well.  I’m just really going to miss xmas eve at my aunts house & the whole merry abide; on the other hand I won’t miss glowering at the kids over table manners and stressing over their behavior.  It’s just a bummer but it’s par for the course for 2009, pretty much every holiday was bullshit this year anyway, new years – worked, thanksgiving – everybody was sick & my cousin just died, my birthday – nothing, all the other holidays, well fuck em’ really.  2010 will hopefully be filled with both more reason to celebrate & the cash to actually do it.

For what it’s worth happy holidays everybody, a fun & safe one for you & your families.

Maybe Wookie life day will be a bit better this year.

Reach Out, a moment of appreciation for Adrian Smith & general procrastination.

First  listen to this I’ll wait

Pretty cool huh?  The song was the B side of Maiden’s “Wasted Years” single notable not only for being a great song but for having guitarist Adrian Smith on lead vocals with Bruce on backup.  It also shows that Adrian has a better voice than most rock frontmen (true he has been a frontman but that I’ll get to later) and further pushes how cool everybody in the band is.

I posted this simply because it’s one of my favorite songs ever, Maiden or not and I just felt like trying to get my Lummoxcateers to hear it.  It’s just one of those songs I can listen to over and over again, it’s also a really fun song to play and unlike most songs by the boyos in Maiden you can sing it if you’re not Bruce.

I’m also having a hard time with one of 2 illustration jobs due on the 20th of this month therefore I’m procrastinating right now with this goofy blog post.  Here listen to this too it’s Maiden covering (and totally pwning) FMs “That Girl”

Here is a rare live performance of the same with Adrian on vocals.

Cool huh?  Ok i’m going to post the link to their inspired cover of Jethro Tull’s “Crosseyed Mary” in order to celebrate Dave Murray’s fantastic legato technique and then I’ll get back to staring at a blank sheet of paper, wish me luck.
